Natural Bodybuilding: True Meaning vs Today's Interpretation

Natural bodybuilding, a term that has long held a significant place in the fitness industry, has undergone a transformative journey that often leaves gym-goers intrigued. Over the years, this concept has evolved from signifying the sculpting of a powerful physique without the aid of steroids, embodying authentic athleticism and unwavering dedication. 

However, recent times have witnessed a perplexing shift in the definition of "natural," resulting in confusion and disputes within the fitness community and mainstream gym goers. 

But how did such a straightforward term become so perplexing? 

In brief, it can be attributed to the influence of profit. Natural bodybuilding competitions are 'FOR PROFIT' ventures, where increased participation means more revenue through entry fees, tanning fees, and growing audiences. More competitors translate to more sponsors and, consequently, more financial gain. This isn't to imply that it's all profit; there are associated costs. 

However, the desire for business growth has, at times, clouded the definition of "natural."

This exploration aims to dispel doubts and equip you with a clearer understanding of what "natural bodybuilding" truly means, enabling you to ask informed questions and have a solid grasp of the term.

 

The Authentic Meaning

Traditionally, "natural bodybuilding" evokes images of athletes who have chiselled their physiques through training, nutrition, recovery and time! never resorting to steroids or performance-enhancing substances, knowingly or unknowingly. These individuals have never used steroids, showcasing the remarkable results achievable through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to a steroid-free lifestyle. 

This pristine achievement initially captivated the natural bodybuilding movement's audience.

The New Definition (Fake Natty) 

Today, natural bodybuilding has taken a different path. It now hinges on the day of testing when the results fail to reveal substances listed on the anti-doping list; an athlete is considered "natural." 

This shift in interpretation has blurred the lines, making it essential to comprehend this evolution. You might encounter individuals with paper-thin skin, in their early twenties, seemingly gifted with genetics resembling mythical figures, who are considered "natural" based on their test results.

The Ten-Year Rule

Under the revised definition, someone can still claim the title of a "natural bodybuilder" if they have refrained from using steroids for the past ten years, regardless of any prior usage or abuse. However, this rule varies among organizing associations. This shift can be seen as an attempt to accommodate those who may have experimented with performance-enhancing substances in the past but now compete cleanly. 

Yet, it has also provided a loophole for individuals to label themselves "natural" while overlooking past steroid use as the intended or side effects of steroids stay for life as still arguably provide an unfair advantage as separation that a steroid free athlete needs, takes more than 10 years to achieve. 

The Influence of Anti-Doping Agencies

the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) plays a significant role. The third definition of natural bodybuilding involves adhering to WADA's extensive list of banned steroids. This standard is stringent but WADA's list is not exclusively for bodybuilding (even lance Armstrong was disqualified through this list) with substances not commonly associated with bodybuilding. 

While adhering to this list ensures a cleaner and more transparent competition, it raises questions about whether using substances not listed by WADA can still be considered "natural." 

Moreover, it's worth noting that WADA may not have detected or recognized all steroids or SARMS sold in black markets all over the world, leaving potential gaps in regulation.

The Path to Ending Stigma

You cant stop people from doing it, those who want to will do it. There will always be people looking for a shortcut. 

- Refrain from judgment. If someone has used steroids but competes honestly, acknowledge their choice and honesty about the associated risks (if they dont compete) as the competitive athlete knows what he is getting into. 

- Understand that steroid use comes with medical and financial burdens. It's not just about hitting the gym; it involves regular visits to endocrinologists, dermatologists, and pathology centres. Avoid pointing fingers without considering the broader context.
